Skin Discoloration

BotoxHow do I correct skin discoloration?

Skin discoloration or “hyperpigmentation” is usually either;

  1. Melasma or
  2. Sun Damage

Melasma is a discoloration deep in the skin, and may be hereditary and/or hormonal. This type of skin discoloration looks like brown patches usually over the cheeks, upper lip, and forehead. It is easily worsened by even small amounts of UV exposure. Melasma requires an aggressive system of home-care products including an Rx cream called Hydroquinone. Hydroquinone or “HQ” is a skin bleacher. Any HQ at 4% or higher requires a prescription from a doctor. Patients with Melasma need to be carefully managed using HQ or it may backfire, and worsen the skin. Melasma treatment also requires regular chemical peels to condition the skin. These chemical peels are needed about every 4-6 weeks.

Brown spots, age spots, “freckles” and sun damage usually do not require a skin bleacher. But these types of discoloration need a home skin care regimen that ranges from moderate to agressive. Sun damage may respond very well to PhotoFacial with beautiful results. A PhotoFacial is a professional light-based treatment performed in the office. The down is several days of redness, darkening of the brown spots and possible peeling. PhotoFacial is a bit painful, but the results are dramatic!!!
