Collagen use in Phoenix, Mesa, Gilbert, Tempe, Queen Creek & Chandler

What is “collagen”?
Most people think of collagen as an injectable for the rich and famous. Because of cost and the need for frequent treatments, collagen truly was available only to those who could afford it.

The first FDA approved collagen that was widely used was Zyderm collagen by Allergan. This collagen is made from bovine(cow) collagen and requires a skin test. It was FDA approved in 1981. Zyderm collagen was used to plump lips, fill in scars and areas of thin skin, much the same as today’s fillers. Unfortunately many patients complained that it only lasted a few weeks.

Some experts believe that bovine collagen products may have caused an increase in auto-immune disorders in people, however there are no studies to prove this. Today, collagen has been mostly replaced by hyaluronic acid fillers like Juvederm and Restylane.
