Skin Discoloration
Is your skin discolored with brown spots, patches or patterns?? Do you look like you have a mustache?? Do you have uneven skin tone or deep pigment issues? You may have a condition called "Hyperpigmentation" or "Melasma".
Hyperpigmentation is the overproduction of melanin in the skin secondary to ultraviolet exposure, trauma or inflamation. Does your acne leave behind a dark spot for months after the pimple is healed?? This is your skin reacting to inflamation. Does your skin discoloration worsen with sun exposure? Hyperpigmentation means that your cells are in an excited state and all these cells want is to produce melanin.
Melasma or "pregnancy mask" is a deeper production of melanin usually due to hormones. Often, having a baby can leave your skin with a pattern of brown patches over your upper lip and cheeks. This melasma gets worse in the sun and seems to have darker and lighter periods.
Hyperpigmentation and Melasma CAN be treated!! Although there is no cure, the very products that help to block the path to brown spots can also help with anti-aging by improving skin texture, fine lines, and helping to prevent pre-cancerous skin lesions!!
The SOONER you begin to fight this discoloration, the sooner you will be on your way to improving your total skin!!
Here at Gilbert Perfect Skin Laser Center we offer the Melanage Skin Lightening System. Melanage is a medium depth peel designed to improve the texture and appearance of hyperpigmented skin which involves a medicated masque and an at-home regimen.
Melanage 1 Masque is applied during an office visit where it is compounded freshly by the aesthetician to ensure its potency and reliability. The masque is removed by the patient after a required length of time depending on his or her skin type---generally 8 to 10 hours. Patients are responsible for adhering to an easy-to-follow, but strict, at-home regimen involving the application of several Melanage products following masque removal.
Results will vary but generally patients will see a significant improvement in the appearance of pigmented areas. Dark spots will lighten and skin texture and tone will improve. Proper skin evaluation by your doctor prior to your peel is important and will help predict the outcome of your peel.
